Analytical Contents CHAPTER I Introductory An investigation into the fundamental nature of an infinitely various yet unitary thing. ANALYTICAL CONTENTS CLArTER V The Foundation of the Church in the Light of the Teaching of Jesus Church, Was the Church founded by Christ Himself, or is it the creation of His disciples? The objection, that our Lord's attitude towards Jewish religion and ecclesiastical author- ity is inconsistent with His foundation of a scientifically untenable. CHAPTER ONE Describes a journey to the Holy Land and an inpression of Jerusalem. I visit the Holy Sepulchre, the Mount of Olives, and the Garden of Gethsemane. CHAPTER TWO How Golgotha was discovered by Constantine under a pagan temple, how the Church of the Holy Sepulchre grew up on the site, and how this church to-day is divided between different Christian communities. I visit the underground quarries which provided the stone for Solomon's Temple, go through the Jewish Quarter on a Sabbath morning, and by night wade through the tunnel which Hezekiah cut in the rock when the Assyrian threatened to conme down like a wolf on the fold." CHAPTER THREE I watch sunrise from the Mount of Olives. I enter the shrine of the Dome of the Rock, which was once the Altar of Burnt Offerings, and I see in a great mosque the ghost of Herod's Temple. I go to Bethany, to Jericho, enter the Inn of the Good Samaritan, walk beside the Dead Sea, visit the Place of Baptism on the banks of the Jordan and climb the Mount of Temptation. APTER FOUR EAGE CHAPTER FIVE On the way to Bethlehem I discover a relic of Pontius Pilate. I visit Bethlehem, enter the Grotto of the Nativity, meet de- scendants of the Crusaders, travel to Hebron and to Beersheba, where I attend a sitting of the Tribal Court. I sleep at Gaza, explore the sandy ruins of Ascalon and watch camels bathing in the sea in accordance with the ancient ritual of Job's Feast. CHAPTER SIX I travel through Samaria, see Jacob's Well, and meet the last Samaritans. I stop for a while in Nazareth and watch the vil- lage carpenter at work, go on to Haifa, where I see Mount Carmel, explore a crusading castle and stand among the ruins of Cæsarea. In which I go to the Sea of Galilee and stay in Tiberias. I walk the hill which once held the palace of Herod Antipas, and ga out fishing with men of Galilee.
